Today, August 29, is More Herbs, Less Salt Day. We are encouraged to find new ways to add flavor to our foods while reducing our salt intake, thus improving our health. There are a couple of takeaways from this holiday.
One, it is important to continue putting our health as a priority. It is easy to get caught up with work, and all too easy to reach out for a bag full of potato chips rather than a nice salad. Our productivity actually increases the healthier we feel. By taking the long view approach and a few extra minutes to prepare something healthy rather than relying on a quick salty snack, we’ll feel better and think clearer. We’re still achieving the same goal of adding great flavor, just in a different way.
A second takeaway is the importance of keeping an open mind to new ways of doing things. If I have a few french fries before me, I could add salt, the typical way of flavoring fries. However, I could try different varieties of Mrs. Dash, or some other herb toppings. Not only would it be healthier, but I may very well find a flavor that I enjoy more than basic salt.
In 2020 we were all forced to change our way of living and working to some point as the pandemic rolled out. We had to find new ways to get through our day to day. I encourage you to not forget those lessons. Even as more and more ways of doing things return to pre-pandemic times, continue to be receptive to trying out new approaches to work and life. Perhaps a process is working, and should continue, but be open to exploring to see if there’s a better way. Are you comfortable in your job and wish to continue? If so, that’s great, but from time to time, do take a look at what opportunities are available. You may find something different that you actually enjoy more. It’s just a matter of finding a different way of achieving the goal such as making a living.
Today, enjoy your herbs more, use a little less salt, and keep an open mind to different (and perhaps better) ways of achieving the original goal.
