Today is the day to start off with a bowl of oatmeal, plain yogurt with fresh fruit, or even a nice banana with an apple on the side. Wash it down with a cup of black coffee or herbal tea. Today, September 26th, we celebrate National Better Breakfast Day.
When the morning arrives, it can be easy for us to reach out to our smartphones to check our email and texts before we even consider what we are going to eat for the day. Are you looking at your calendar and your to-do list before you even look in your kitchen? Are you thinking about how to meet a deadline at work before you really think about how you are going to nourish your body?
A rich, decadent coffee drink you pick up on the way to the office will certainly satisfy your taste buds. That box of donuts in the breakroom can be all too tempting as you make your way to your desk, especially when faced with a morning packed with meetings. You may tell yourself that you need that sugar rush to stay awake for the hour-long meeting before lunch. We can justify a breakfast packed with sugar and grease, or we may go the other way and skip breakfast altogether. Lunch isn’t that far off, is it?
Today we remember the importance of giving our bodies nourishment to get through a busy day. We remember that a bowl of oatmeal with a side of fresh fruit will take us much further than an oatmeal cookie. A fresh apple in the long run will be more satisfying than an apple flavored breakfast bar. Consider warming up with a nice cup of black coffee, perhaps adding just a splash of skim milk if needed. Want something different? Savor a cup of herbal tea to calm any anxiety you are feeling about what lies ahead in the office. While you are sipping your sugar-free beverage, take a few minutes for yourself before running out the door.
Remember, your blood pressure is more important than a meeting agenda. Your blood sugar level is more important than meeting a sales figure. Your health is more important than a report deadline.
