Thank A Custodian Today

Today, October 2nd, we appreciate the hard work of those who make our workplaces safe to work in. Today is National Custodian Day.

As we arrive at the office, we may bid a “Good Morning” to the security guard at the door, give a pleasant smile to the receptionist in the lobby, and ask our coworkers how their weekend went when we get to our desks. Throughout the day, we will acknowledge coworkers and members of other departments as we move about the building attending meetings, going to the cafeteria, and grabbing some coffee in the breakroom. During the day, you may or may not recognize the lonely janitor emptying trash cans or cleaning up the public restroom.

We take it for granted that the breakroom will be clean when we go in for that extra cup of coffee. We assume the restroom will be clean when we run in between meetings. We expect the tables in the cafeteria to be clean as we sit down to eat our lunch. However, are we thanking the people responsible for keeping our work environment safe? Are we remembering to be grateful for the individuals working to ensure that our space is sanitary?

When Covid-19 first hit the scene, I remember watching some videos where people were thanking these workers for making sure their areas were regularly maintained. They remembered to thank those who couldn’t work from home, who had to come into the office, who worked hard to keep the office safe and sanitary for those who were coming into the building. For a brief period, it seemed these individuals were being recognized for their work.

Life has moved on. We are no longer in 2020, and we have gotten used to our new routines. Unfortunately, many have also gotten used to assuming the office will be clean and safe without remembering those who make that environment possible. The custodial staff has gone back to blending in the background in our office spaces.

Today, remember to thank the man cleaning out the trash can at your desk, so you don’t have to take the trash out during your workday. Remember to thank the woman cleaning the bathroom so you have a sanitary place to wash your hands. It doesn’t take too much effort to wish “Good morning” if you happen to pass a member of the custodial staff on your way to your desk. It only takes a moment to bid “Good evening” to the janitor working their rounds as you pack up your things at the end of the workday.

Don’t let someone’s fancy job title determine how much effort you should acknowledge them. The size of paycheck shouldn’t make a difference in recognizing a worker’s effort. Be grateful for their hard work not only today on National Custodian Day, but every day.
