True Leadership, Not Arrogance, Moves Business Forward

Today’s post for October 18th references a quote from my Franklin planner:

  • “The greatest ability in business is to get along with others and influence their actions. A chip on the shoulder is too heavy a piece of baggage to carry through life.” – John Hancock

We have all had a boss who reminded us that they were in charge, but they were not true leaders. As we know there are business leaders who are leaders in title only because they do not truly lead people. Today’s quote reminds us that a true leader is one who works with those who follow them. A true business leader will appreciate everyone contributing to the business. A true business leader will inspire others to contribute their best work not out of fear but out of a desire to further the business success.

Unfortunately, there are too many business leaders who choose to lead through fear and manipulation, never appreciating the work of their employees. They do not appreciate the unique set of talent and skill that everyone brings to the table. Their vision of the business is theirs alone and they will not listen to those around them who can provide unique perspectives and ideas which could further the business’s success.

Who comes to mind when you think of a successful business leader? What kind of leader would you like to follow? Do you perform your best work under stress, harboring fear of the unknown? Or do you perform your best work when your manager provides you with more of the big picture and asks for fresh ideas? Is the business leader who brings you into the planning process, who appreciates your skill set and will listen to your innovative ideas the business leader you would rather follow?

If you are a manager keep this idea in mind the next time you go into a meeting to discuss a new project or a new idea. The next time you sit down with an employee for a review, consider viewing that employee as an individual rather than just a direct report. Remember that individuals are here to contribute, they have talent and skills, they are not robots. By removing that chip on your shoulder, you open the opportunity to listen to fresh perspectives from your team. This will help all of you work together to move the business forward. True leaders influence others, they do not fall back on arrogance.
