Expression Through Writing

Today, October 20th, we celebrate National Day on Writing. We look at the various ways writing can help us express ourselves.

Writing can be a very personal thing. A journal is a great way to capture your thoughts at any given moment of time. You can depict your excitement at receiving a new job offer. You can put down on paper your fears after being laid off. You can look back months or even years later and remember how far you have come.

Writing can help you reach out to those for whom you care. A handwritten note of thanks to that coworker who helped you out on what seemed to be an impossible project when you couldn’t see a path forward. A quick word of thanks to the boss who recommended you for that promotion. A thank you note to the friend who listened to you vent about work. Writing our thoughts allows us to see with our eyes how much our words can show gratitude or can show dismay. Unlike the spoken word, the written word allows us to check it twice (or more) before being passed along to the intended audience.

Writing can help us further our professional goals. A well written resume can help us get our foot in the door toward a new job opportunity. A great project idea will most likely remain just an idea until the details can be laid out in a proper document. A process manual can bring understanding of a maze of information for the new employee.

Your writing may be only for your own benefit, or it may be something designed for a large audience. The purpose of a piece may simply be to reflect on the past, or it may be designed to help educate one for the future. Your writing may come to existence with pen and paper, or it may come to life at your fingertips on a keyboard. Whatever the form or the purpose of your writing, today use the powerful tool of the written word to express yourself.
