Reflecting on Your Career Path

Today, November 6th, is Job Action Day. Today is the day to take a step back and take a second look at your career path.

Are you looking for a job? From time to time, it is important for job seekers to evaluate their job seeking approach. Be honest with yourself when looking at your strategy and think about what is working. There is no one way to look for a job. There are different ways to approach the search depending on the individual. If you haven’t landed an interview in a while, or if you aren’t hearing back from hiring managers after several interviews, it’s time to take a second look. Perhaps your resume needs a bit of a refresh. Maybe your LinkedIn profile isn’t quite complete. Perhaps a mock interview with an objective observer can point out your strengths and weaknesses in the interview process.

Are you currently in your ideal role? It’s also important to consider a few things. How stable is that role? Have you seen any possible signs of change to the role, or it’s possible elimination? What would you do if you were suddenly advised that the position would no longer be continued or merged with another group? If you haven’t recently, perhaps you should review the last time you worked on developing a new skill or improving on an existing skill. Have you kept up with your networking just in case? Perhaps that position will continue as is, but is it enough? Are there any other opportunities available now that warrant another look?

It’s important to always be prepared for the unexpected. You never know when an opportunity will arise, even if you aren’t looking for one. Today, Job Action Day, we remember to stay on our toes, and keep in mind what is important in a career. While we all work to pay the bills, we should also look deeper at why we do what we do. We should consider if what we do is fulfilling. For those actively looking for a job, think about which positions you are pursuing, and how. Today, we stop for a moment, take a step back, and really consider the career roadmap from this point. You may find yourself validating your current path, or seeing where small changes are warranted.
