Never Stop Learning

Today’s post is inspired by a quote from my Franklin planner for today.

  • “The excitement of learning separates youth from old age. As long as you’re learning, you’re not old.” – Rosalyn Sussman Yalow

There never seems to be enough hours in a day. There’s always one more meeting, one more assignment to get done, one more item to be checked off the list before we can go home for the day. At home, there’s always one more house chore to get done, one more meal to prepare, one more to-do item that needs to be wrapped up before we can go to bed. A few hours of sleep, and we wake up to repeat it all over again. The stress can wear on the body after a while.

It is important to make time to continue learning. For work, this may mean blocking out 30 minutes on your calendar to work on your communication skills or taking a quick course to brush up on some software skills. At home, perhaps set aside an hour to watch a cooking course online. Schedule a weeknight to take a foreign language class. Maybe spending at least one Saturday a month at the local library to check out some books on the history of your favorite music or favorite holiday.

This time that you invest in yourself may lead to a promotion at work, or even open a door to a new career. That cooking class may give you an idea for preparing the feast for that next big holiday that everyone will talk about. You may pick up on some trivia that will make everyone want you as part of their team on trivia nights. Even if you don’t gain money or notoriety from what you learn, though, you will still gain knowledge. Taking a little time for yourself to learn something you didn’t know before is a gift to yourself. You never know where that knowledge will lead, but it’s important to keep learning and growing in life.

Never think you are too old to learn something new. It doesn’t matter if you are 8, 18 or 80, you should always strive to learn a little something new as you move through life.
