Service Of Others Over Self

Today’s post is inspired by Veteran’s Day, which is officially tomorrow, November 11th. Some US businesses will be observing today, November 10th, the Friday before. Veteran’s Day is a day to honor Americans who have served in the military.

These men and women served in various capacities for the purpose of preserving freedom. The goal of their time in the military wasn’t to make large sums of money. They didn’t have the ability to negotiate raises in their salary or an extra week of vacation a year. They couldn’t pick up and move to another location whenever they wished. They couldn’t negotiate for shorter hours to make time for family obligations. They couldn’t strike to protest working conditions.

The men and women of the military serve where they are sent, in job roles to which they are assigned. They have individual goals and dreams of where they would like to be in the future. However, they understand that the highest priority goal is to protect the nation. What is best for the nation is held higher than their own personal desires.

We can learn a great deal from these servant leaders. We all have dreams of where we would like to be 5, 10, and 20 years from now. We have goals we would like to meet by the end of the year, by the end of next year, and the year after that. However, it is also important to look at things from the perspective of the big picture. When looking at what you want to pursue, are you also looking at what is best for your family? In your organization, when setting goals for yourself, are you also taking into consideration your team? When looking at what you prioritize in life, do you include serving others in that list?

Veteran’s Day is a day to honor those who served our nation. Thank those who sacrificed for others and consider what we can learn from them. How are you serving others? When you set goals in your life, are you considering how the pursuit of those goals could help others?
