Today, November 30th, is National Mason Jar Day. Today we look at how an object so simple can be used in so many ways. It’s amazing what we can do when we don’t limit our creativity.
John Landis Mason patented the Mason jar in 1858. Over the years, after the patent expired, other companies came up with similar jars. These jars are still used extensively for home canning. Such a simple object can be used to store food, providing tasty, safe food for people long after a harvest.
While the Mason jar may first evoke thoughts of fruit preserves, this simple jar can be used in a whole variety of ways when the holder of the jar allows their creativity to run. Removing the lid, the jar is a fantastic way to enjoy some iced tea on a hot summer afternoon. I love using a Mason jar when creating an iced mocha, complete with whipped cream and a generous topping of caramel sauce.
While the Mason jar can be used for storing a variety of foods, or even enjoying a nice beverage, there are other ways to enjoy the Mason jar outside of the kitchen. It can hold pens and pencils on your desk. It can securely store pins and any other small items associated with your favorite hobby. Do you need to add a little décor to brighten up a dark corner in your room? Add a small battery-powered light along with some of your favorite seasonal decorations to add a cozy glow to a room. Decorate with a bow and fill it with colorful flowers as part of a spring table setting. The possibilities are endless.
Just as a simple glass jar can provide both practical as well as fun uses for the owner, our skills shouldn’t be limited to one specific area. Are you good at organizing the office holiday party each year? Perhaps you could use those skills in a side business of event planning. Are you a regular contributor to the company newsletter? Perhaps you could use those writing skills toward some freelance writing, or even write a novel. Don’t limit your skills and talents to be used in one set way. Let your creativity run a little in how you can use those skills in ways that you will enjoy.
Today, find a new way to enjoy a Mason jar in your household. While you’re at it, also think of a new way you can turn a talent into a different endeavor.
