Be Humble, Not Prideful

Today, January 3rd, is Humiliation Day. This is not the day to go out and humiliate someone. Rather, this is the day to humble ourselves and to remember that we are all equal before God.

There are many voices in the world that speak of pride. Pride is embraced and encouraged. It is spoken of as an ideal for people to attain. However, where can that lead us? When we are prideful, we tend to see ourselves as better than someone. It is easy to judge, feeling we have the right to dictate to someone they are wrong simply because they are different.

What does humility do? Humility reminds us that we are no better than our neighbor. We may judge someone’s actions, such as a person breaking the law when they steal, but we cannot judge the person. We do not have that right. I have faults, so what gives me the right to judge the heart of the thief stealing from the store? We are simply both imperfect people, imperfect in our own ways.

With humility, I know I am no better than my neighbors, my coworkers, and the strangers I meet in the grocery store. We are all people trying to get through the day, with talents, and faults. While I can be proud of doing a respectable job, I also remember that I must always continue doing better. There is always someone more talented than me, smarter than me, who can finish a project faster and better than me.

Humility reminds me to just be the best me I can be and show compassion for others in life.
