Loss Can Lead to Opportunity

Today, January 4th, is World Braille Day. Today we celebrate the birthday of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system which provides the written word to those who have lost sight. The inventor developed this system as a result of losing his own sight as a child.

The Braille system was born from the tragedy of a child losing his sight yet desiring a way to continue reading. His pursuit led to a system which would open doors for people with visual impairments for years to come.

We never know how unfortunate circumstances will open opportunities in our lives. A job loss may lead to a new career direction that brings more fulfillment. That rejection letter from a potential employer may lead you to continue sending your resume to that next company with an even better available position. Losing out on a promotion may be the wake up call you need to look toward a different direction.

Loss in our professional and personal lives hurt. The dashed hopes can be a crushing blow. However, it is important to continue moving forward. Do not let setbacks continue to hold you back. Step back, look at what happened, and look for what can come out of it. It is okay to take some time to grief the loss, to miss the security you thought you had. But then move forward and see how this unfortunate situation can benefit you in the long run.

Braille did not let the loss of his sight hold him back from the world of reading. Do not let a loss hold you back from moving forward.
