Today’s post is inspired by a quote in my Franklin planner for today, January 8th:
- “If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor” – Jennifer Jones
Life is hectic. We work, care for loved ones, try to make time for friends, perhaps even school, or some kind of continuing education. We try (or at least should) make some time for hobbies. On good days, we may be quite busy but incredibly happy with how the time is being spent. On bad days, we may have to constantly remind ourselves why we are working so hard when all we want to do is escape to a sunny beach or cabin in the mountains.
For both good days and bad days, it is important to remember the importance of humor. This is easy on a good day. Laughing at a friend’s joke is easy when the day is going well. On a difficult day, laughter can be the last thing on your mind. However, it is on the bad days that we need humor the most. Humor reminds us that this stressful moment will pass. Humor can help break the tension during demanding situations.
A joke from a nurse or a fellow patient can be just what a cancer patient needs to hear during a chemotherapy treatment. A quick humorous line can be just the thing to lift the spirit of a daughter awaiting the outcome of her father’s heart surgery or mother’s cancer surgery. A small chuckle from a coworker’s joke can help a stressed-out worker who is drowning in a never-ending workload.
The ability to laugh is important, even in the difficult situations. Finding humor may be difficult at times but can help you get through the day. Providing a humorous moment for someone else needing a laugh is a gift.
