Celebrating Language

What is your favorite word? Today, January 9th, we celebrate National Word Nerd Day. We celebrate language by learning a new word, or even creating one of our own.

Many of you probably used large dictionaries and thesauruses to add variety to the vocabulary in your school papers. I was one of those students. Today, a quick search online can give you a list of potential words to add a rich flavor to a school paper, a speech, or an article. Whether you are using a book or the Internet, it is worth using a source to broaden our vocabulary in our work. Using a variety of adjectives to help describe your thoughts of your spouse’s home cooked meal will be appreciated more than a simple “it was good.” The wider the vocabulary, the further you can describe your disdain, or your love, of a food item, or an art piece.

During today’s celebration of words, consider creating one of your own. Is there an emotion for which you just can’t find the right word? Make one. Is there a beautiful song which impacts you in a way you can’t describe in words? Invent one that says just what you need to say.

Another way to celebrate today is to learn your favorite word in other languages. How do you say “alluring” in Spanish, German, or any other language spoken by a friend or a coworker?

Today, we celebrate language. Learn a new word and how to say it in another language. Create a new word and share it with your friends. Words are powerful. Let’s celebrate broadening our vocabulary and the ability to better share our thoughts and feelings with others.
