Today, January 11th, is International Thank-You Day. Today is the day to remember the importance of expressing gratitude to those in our lives who have helped us.
After a big event, we know the importance of expressing thank you. We send thank you cards (via paper or electronically) upon receiving presents after a wedding or baby shower. Perhaps after Christmas, you spent some time sending out thank you notes to those who gave you presents as part of the festive season.
While certain events may trigger a reminder to send someone a thank you card, what about everyday life? When was the last time you gave someone a thank you note for listening to you while you poured your heart out after a bad breakup? When was the last time you at least sent a quick electronic “Thank You” to that coworker who helped you out on that project at work, even though it wasn’t part of their job description? What about the friend who took you out to lunch to cheer you up after you got a rejection letter following a job interview?
“Thank you” can be expressed verbally, or written, but whichever way you express it, make sure the receiving party knows it is from the heart. It doesn’t take a long time to express gratitude, but it can certainly go a long way to let the other person understand that their simple gesture made a positive difference.
The more we let others know how much we appreciate them, the more we’ll remember the importance of reaching out and helping others. Be grateful, let those who have helped you along the way in life know you appreciate their help, and look out for opportunities to be that person reaching out to lend another person a helping hand.
