Come In from the Cold Day

Today, January 22nd, is the day to get out of the cold, go inside, and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or a bowl of soup. This is also a day to be thankful that we can come out of the cold.

Some people have jobs that keep them outdoors in the wintry weather. Package delivery drivers must push through the day, even in the frigid temperatures, to get packages containing medicines, gifts, or necessities delivered to customers eager for their delivery. Road construction crews work through the frigid air to repair streets for us to commute safely without potholes blocking our paths. Police officers and firefighters must brave the cold to help those needing assistance.

Some people unfortunately must live in the cold. They may be homeless, with only a thin blanket or cardboard box as a weak barrier against the freezing wind and rain. Some people have a home, but without the means to pay for the utilities to keep their home warm.

Today, if you are blessed to have a warm place to live and work, be grateful. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or cocoa or enjoy a hot bowl of soup with a friend. Also, consider sharing a “thank-you” to the delivery worker dropping off a package at your office or home. Let the police officer or firefighter you may pass by today know you appreciate what they do.

While paying for that hot cup of coffee, consider how you can donate even a small amount to a homeless shelter in your city. Maybe you even have a little free time to volunteer some of your time there. Maybe there is a program where you can send donations that provide assistance to those who can’t afford to heat their homes.

Be grateful if you can come out of the cold and enjoy that time with a special person in your life.
