Today, January 29th, we celebrate the seeing-eye guide dog. Today we recognize the contribution these furry friends make toward providing those with visual disabilities with a more independent life.
Seeing-eye dogs are more than a pet. Their owners can move about safely to work, school, and various errands without having to rely on someone else. These four-legged helpers do provide loving kisses and enjoy play time with their owners. However, they will also prevent their owners from stepping out in front of a speeding car or walking into a dangerous construction zone.
It is easy to take things for granted. If I need to get something from the grocery store, I just have to make the time, get through a little traffic, and run in to pick up the items I need. I do not have to ask someone for a ride. The hardest part of the trip will be finding a parking space. I am so incredibly blessed to have that be the biggest obstacle for such an errand.
If you do see someone with a seeing-eye dog, remember to give the dog room to work. Do not run up to them to pet them and try to play with them. Do not complain to the manager at a restaurant that you saw someone bring in their dog. Do respect the dog is working to keep his owner safe. Do respect that the dog owner is exercising their right to an independent life.
Today, remember to give seeing-eye dogs the respect they deserve. Perhaps, if you have a little extra money, consider donating to help train another dog to give someone their independence.
