Today, April 3rd, is International Don’t Go to Work Unless It’s Fun Day. Today is the day to take some time for yourself. Go out for coffee with a friend. Go for a long walk while enjoying some fresh air. Take a long lunch.
Not everyone can have a fun day today. Reports will not complete themselves. Project work needs to continue meeting deadlines. Those weekly meetings will not disappear today.
However, it is important for us to keep aware of why we do what we do. Remember we work to live, not the other way around. If you can take some personal time today, do not feel guilty about it. That break from work can be just what you need to give you a fresh perspective on things. Burnout will never lead to fresh ideas.
If you are working today, try to have a little fun with it. Share a funny story with a colleague while fetching that cup of coffee in the breakroom between meetings. At that next meeting, wish everyone a good day, and perhaps share for a few minutes a funny joke before diving into the project updates. Maybe set a funny picture on your computer to give everyone a laugh that comes to your desk to discuss a matter. Anything that can give the people in your office a reason to smile.
While we cannot expect every day to be a party at work, we can make the best of it. By having a little fun, everyone is reminded that at the end of the day, we are all working to support our families and ourselves so we can live. It is important to keep things in perspective while making your way through the workday. Do not let stress and burnout dominate overtake you.
