National Old Maids Day

Today, June 4th, is National Old Maids Day. Today we recognize that not all women include marriage and children in their life’s plan.

First, let me preface this by saying there is absolutely nothing wrong with raising a family. If a woman finds the love of her life, and is blessed with children, that is something to be celebrated.

However, not all women will find that husband with whom they can share their life. Not all women desire raising a family. Their life goals are different. Not better or worse, simply different.

This day resonates with me as an older single woman. I have never found the man with whom I wished to share my life. For that matter, I never really looked. While I was not sure what God had in store for me over the years, somehow a husband and children did not seem to be part of the picture. I have seen other women happily marry. Sometime later, some would excitedly announce the arrival of a child. I would be incredibly happy for them. I was not jealous, wishing it were me making that announcement. Just thoroughly happy that she was achieving her dreams.

Today we recognize different women have different goals in life. If a woman dreams of marriage and family, we should celebrate when that dream is realized. If a woman dreams of a different path which does not include a family, that should also be celebrated. We should not look down on one path and celebrate the other. Today, we remember that women, with or without children, hold different dreams which should not be assessed based on a judgmental society’s views.
