Prepare Before the Storm

Today’s post is inspired by the Quote of the Day in my Franklin planner:

  • “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” – John F. Kennedy

In today’s economy, we are very accustomed to having everything just in time. “Just in time shipping” allows stores to bring in inventory just before they expect big sales. “Same day delivery” allows consumers to have the goods from an online shipping experience dropped off at their door that day, rather than planning earlier in the week to make the purchase and allowing time for that delivery to take place.

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with this. If there are resources available, why not take advantage of last-minute planning if technology can make that possible?

However, we shouldn’t always assume resources will be available with little to no planning. Life can throw curveballs at you. A well-planned emergency savings can help ease the blow, whereas a zero-balance savings account can only add to the stress. Taking some precautions with our health today can help ease, or even prevent, some health issues later in life. Better than waiting until receiving a devastating diagnosis to then think about changing eating and exercise habits.

We can’t live in constant fear. Dreadful things will happen. If we do a little planning ahead, though, that preparation can reduce if not eliminate what comes.

You wouldn’t want to wait till a heavy rainstorm comes to then remember your roof is long past due for a repair or replacement. Better to prepare in good times, so when challenging times come, you’ll be ready for the storm.
