New Year, New Start

Here we are in the new year, 2024. Many people will be reviewing their list of New Year’s Resolutions, determined that this will be the year they keep their commitments. They will lose that weight, they will go for that job, they will push for that promotion, etc.

I am not a huge fan of New Year Resolutions. However, with the new year, it is an excellent time to start fresh. Evaluating where you are, and setting goals for improvement in your life is admirable. It is important, though, to not let this process set you up for failure. Setting a goal for weight loss is fine, but don’t despair over not getting to that goal weight. Consider focusing on setting a goal to lose some weight but focusing more on your overall health. This way, you may celebrate losing those first five pounds, but celebrate even more if you lower your blood pressure or find you have more energy in the day. This will help you remember what is more important, your weight listed on a scale or your overall wellbeing.

Perhaps you have a goal to get a promotion at work. This is fine but consider focusing more on being prepared for something better at work. You may get that promotion, but you don’t want to limit yourself. The preparation for a promotion may help you prepare for a new position in a different department, if not a different company.

Are you like me, starting out in the world of self-employment? There are goals to be considered but remember to celebrate the small milestones along the way this year. The failures that come, and they will come because that is life, should be viewed as learning opportunities. Don’t let these stumbling blocks prevent you from moving forward this year.

Today we celebrate a new year with a fresh start. Remember that throughout this new year, there will be opportunities to start anew. Setbacks don’t have to prevent you from moving forward, they simply provide a learning opportunity, or a gentle nudge in a different direction. If you are putting together a list of resolutions, consider adding the fact that you will not let failure hold you back be one of those resolutions to help you throughout this new year.

Happy New Year, Welcome 2024!
